A Different Sun A Novel of Africa Elaine Neil Orr Books
As I reached the halfway point in "A Different Sun", a wonderful novel, I thought that the strength of the story was Ms. Orr's thorough grasp of the African people and her uniquely gifted way of articulating that through the story. I now realize that I was doing the author an injustice. This book is much more than that. This is a book about love, not infatuation, not vapid romance, but true and abiding love between a man and a woman, both of whom have flaws and shortcomings like each of us. It is a book about faith and the bent world that we live in. How can a person have faith in God when so much around them seems ungodly? Through Emma and Henry, Wole and Duro and Jacob and others, we find that answer. It is not an easy answer but it is a true one. I won't spoil it for you. Read the book. It is also an inspiring story of perseverance, failure, and perseverance once more.As a writer, I find myself almost intimidated by the pith contained in each of Ms. Orr's sentences. E. B. White (yes he of Charolette's Web and Stuart Little fame) wrote a wonderul booklet on writing. (Strunk and White's "The Element's of Style") I must regularly refer to that little book in order to coach myself. The authors of it are constantly warning against wordiness. We live in a culture of empty, meaningless verbosity. Rather than increase the value of words, the internet has rendered us awash in them, most of them better left unwritten or unsaid. Ms. Orr understands words. She wields the written word as a razor sharp rapier which cuts right to the point that her charcters wish to convey. This trait in a writer has great value to the reader. You will never feel like skipping over so much as a paragraph. If you do you will surely miss something worthwhile.
I can only close with the highest praise I can bestow. This is a book I will read again...and then again. Buy it, read it, and then keep it on your shelf. Like Emma's writing box, it is something to be treasured.

A Different Sun A Novel of Africa Elaine Neil Orr Books Reviews
Elaine Neil Orr is a wordsmith of the highest caliber. "A Different Sun" takes us on a missionary journey to Africa and into a world that few know first-hand. The story focuses not so much on the religious aspect of missionary work as the experience of simply living in a different culture, being an exception among the native inhabitants, and staying true to the purpose of the work. There are many tests that challenge the central characters and it's interesting on that level alone; but, I found myself re-reading many passages just to delight in the language. The prose is beautiful, lyrical, and one gets the impression that Orr thoughtfully crafted each phrase, each sentence, every idea. One can find any number of reasons to love this book. Highly recommended!
This fascinating novel is based on the journal of a real woman. Married to a missionary, Emma leaves life on a plantation where slavery is seen as normal and travels to Africa with her husband. The story, beautifully crafted and told (a joy to read!), explores psychology, gender issues, and Emma's growing discomfort with the idea of enslaving human persons. Full of details that bring Africa into your living room, this timeless novel is thought-provoking and relevant.
Just as I watched the sun setting over the blue Caribbean Sea, I finished reading “A Different Sun.” It was so perfect a story. I could identify with it on many levels. It brought back vivid memories of arriving in a country I had never seen, and learning to appreciate and love a people so very different in appearance, yet similar in many ways. We lived for 39 years on a small island as missionaries. I came, as Emma did, young and naïve. I too felt rather superior in some ways, and soon ( but, perhaps not soon enough) came to realize I had so much I could learn from the very people I had come to teach. I highlighted so many parts of the book as I read. It was written with words so rich in style, so profound, in so many ways. I have written a memoir taken from my Grandmother Elsie’s diary. Now I wonder how Elaine would have told Elsie’s story. Elsie had some rather cryptic notes in her diary. I was able to discover answers to some of them while doing research. I recently wrote a “tidbit” on my website entitled, “If only walls could talk.” I suppose that is what historical novels do. They allow us to “hear the walls” reveal the stories behind those who lived before our time. I felt Africa; I seemed to hear the walls of Emma’s home’s revealing secrets. Thank you, Elaine for sharing this vivid story.

I can’t remember now if I learned of this book from my Sunday paper, a magazine article, or where. I just remember it sounded wonderful and noticed, when checking it out here that it got rave reviews. In fact, there are only a handful lower than four stars.
I really wanted to love this book, to feel all the adjectives reviewers were using, to read the last page with a sigh, wishing it to go on and on. While the book was good and I never had to force myself to pick it up and continue, I found myself always waiting and hoping for that magic to begin. I never really connected with the central characters and even found them mildly irritating at times.
Time spent reading this was certainly not wasted. It’s a good story (based loosely on a real-life missionary’s journal) in an interesting setting . I guess my expectations were just too high.
