This was the perfect book to read when I had a cold. Quick, fun, and great to read in little sections when I needed to sit down and rest for five minutes.
All in all, this is a charming western, with nary a bad word or hint of objectionable content. Should my kids get into westerns (with me as a mom, they have a good chance, right?), I'll gladly hand them this to read when they're old enough to understand it.
I have a soft spot for all things western, and this story did an excellent job of recreating that "Old West" feel that I love. It kept my interest from start to finish and is just the perfect length for a fun read over a weekend. Looking forward to reading more of Foley's work!
Left-Hand Kelly is a fun western story. I picked it up one busy day and became so intrigued with the story that I finished it in half a day--and between jobs and errands at that! The story is very interesting and the characters are easy to sympathize with and root for. I became quite fond of Sheriff Clark in particular and would love to read a sequel about his life...it was hard to part with him at the end of the story, I wanted to know more about him.
Summed up in a short sentence I would say that although this is not my favorite western it is surely worth a read. It would be perfect for a relaxing afternoon's jaunt into the west--and you'll probably find it hard to put down just as I did. It makes a fine gift!
I had the privilege of an early look at this book. I've already devoured the Colorado-based Victorian mysteries Elisabeth Grace Foley writes, and I was quite happy to get my hands on another of her stories.
Left-Hand Kelly is not your usual Western. It's Western in setting and flavor, but it doesn't conform to the cookie-cutter image we know as a Western today. The plot style is reminiscent of more classic Westerns, such as an Owen Wister or B. M. Bower, where the setting and lifestyle was more important than the reader's modern shoot-em-up romp. There's more substance and authenticity here. I also love that it's clean!
Summary Colvin is on the tramp when he witnesses a duel between Lew Kelly and Bob Reeves, which leaves Lew wounded and Bob on the run. When he heads out of town, he thinks he's done with that portion of his life, but a string of circumstances brings him back in contact with the quiet, warlike Kellys...and brings him back to town just as Bob ventures back for the first time since the duel. Bullets and excitement are sure to abound!
Women write differently than men. Not too many make the grade in the "traditional", violence-ridden, pioneering style hard core western genre. Those that do bring something extra to a good story. Elizabeth Foley is one of the women who does that well. There's an unusual degree of depth in the characters, whilst many unspoken philosophical questions litter the story. They don't get in the way mind you, they just keep the interest high until things slowly resolve. Yep. Different. Well worth the reading...
A well-written western by an author who obviously loves the genre. An enjoyable short read.
I can't even begin to describe how thrilled I was with this book! The whole story, plot, setting; the characters, from Dr Fairchild, to Matt Kelly down, were absolutely brilliant! The style of the story reminded me a little of some of John Buchan's books, especially 'Prester John' for some reason, and that just added to the excitement and thrilling adventure of the whole book from beginning to end.
I really liked Dr Fairchild, with his amusing ways and little habits, and I also felt sorry for all the Kellys, except perhaps the father, Jack Kelly. And, once again, Elisabeth Grace Foley's ability for painting vivid and clear pictures of people and settings, with such few words, had me spell-bound.
An excellent story, definitely something I'll read again soon!
I'd recommend this book to ages 13+.
