I wasnt sure I was going to like this. You know what its like reading reviews and well my friends seemed to like the book but there are a few reviews who didnt like it. It sounded great to me so considering my friends reviews I took a chance and I am glad I did. I really loved the book.

Its completely different from any shifter type romance novel out there. At this point its not a romance perse but as we get to the end you see that its a possibility. The Others are a little savage. They take any violent act in the Courtyard against them serious and usually eat them so there is a smidge of cannibalism but not really only because they are "others" and not human just can take human form. Even simple trespassing will get you maimed. I'll admit I got grossed out a couple of times. You would think that stuff would get me to stop reading it! Uh no...although I cringed and winced I kept freaking reading! I couldnt stop!

We meet Meg who is on the run from her Controllers. She's a Blood Prophet aka cassandra sangue. She bleeds with a small precision cuts and gets visions of prophesies. It causes a huge amount of pain and she was used in this way. It causes a pleasurable euphoria after pain. She is addicted to it but not horribly yet. She's sweet and it doesnt take long for the Others to see this. They dont know what she is right away but know she's hiding something. She's not well versed in much of the outside world. She knows what things are but as far as experiencing it nope. She's got an innocence to her. She's timid at first and scared. Especially of the Others. However, she goes and applies for a job with the scariest Other...the head of the Courtyard, Simon Wolfgard. Will she even survive or will she get eaten too?

Simon Wolfgard. He's abrasive and mean and scary. He's an a-hole to be honest. Especially at first but he warms to you about halfway in. He's still grumpy but his character grows as he gets to know Meg and how humans are. He knows not all of them are bad but he takes a bit to accept her even a little. He's got these feelings (not romantic yet) and he's very confused with how she smells and it pisses him off! He's totally grateful how Meg helps Sam...not happy with how she did it but he's willing to overlook it. Not everyone is and not everyone likes her at first. It really isnt easy for her to be accepted and trusted. They do so slowly. This has great characters interesting ones who are protective of Meg. I'm still curious what Tess is but she's one scary one! Elementals....scary too but wow they really like Meg. Vlad you gotta like this guy scary as hell for a vampire but funny and good personality and protective mode. Other characters so many to mention but all likable. Except Asia...well she got hers and thats all I am saying.

I really enjoyed this book and will continue with the series. One negative thing is I really like my books especially these kinds on audio. However, they are very expensive. 13 for audio and that doesnt include the cost of the book. I've never seen that cost before. Normally its 3-4 bucks. I cant afford that so I'll stick with buying the ebooks only.

Written In Red A Novel of the Others Book 1 edition by Anne Bishop Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Overall Written in Red had potential with its imaginative world, but failed utterly to deviate from the most basic and boring of plot lines. Do not recommend.

While the world was original, the characters were painfully flat. An overly masculine male lead, a poor, kindhearted victim for our heroine, and a superficial, obviously "evil" antagonist. I don't know that I really blame Meg for being pathetic, but the two images of runaway slave and helpless little girl were not well reconciled in the book. Given her education, Meg would understandably have been naive, but in order to run away she must also have had some spark of defiance and a desire for self-sufficiency. Simon remarks at one point that Meg trusts hardly anyone, but her actions reveal quite the opposite. She blindly trusts everyone in the Courtyard, approaching powerful, reportedly vicious unknown beings with a smile and a package. Why should anyone in the Courtyard like her? They seem to measure each other's worth based on physical strength and deadliness, and instead viewing the most helpless of all humans as prey, they love her?? Because she brings them mail??? Even I wanted to eat Meg most of the time.
If you are like me you have read a gazillion UF books with the same old same old Shifter/Vampire/Werewolf characterization. They are all super-hot and slightly more aggressive than the average alpha male but basically they are humans that just happen to have a special diet OR can turn furry. NOPE NOPE NOPE….this is not that story.

In this world the creatures that have both a human form and an animal form are not to ever be thought of as human. They might be able to mimic being human to a certain extent but they do not understand most human things and while a few humans might be useful they think of most of them as Meat. Yes you heard me right human are generally dinner in this book and more than one is eaten. I’m pretty sure they all deserved it….pretty sure.

“Enjoy your evening.”
“That will depend on the menu. If it’s beef, it will be a tolerable meal. If it’s chicken . . .” Elliot shuddered. “What is the point of chicken?”
“Eggs?”

This was one of those books that I really had a difficult time putting down. Once I was wrapped up in the Otherness of the word with Elemental Avatars walking about, various animal/human other combinations and Meg (we will get to her in a second) I was completely wrapped up and couldn’t set the book down.

It all starts with Meg coming to ask Simon for the Liaison job for the Others in the middle of a snow storm. He is confused by her because she is human but doesn’t smell like prey and he knows she is running from something but he can’t tell what. Meg’s history and what she can do is fascinating to say the least. She is a Blood Prophet, which means when she cuts her skin she sees prophecies of the future for who or what she is focused on. This also means that whoever she ran away from want her back desperately.

A small warning Meg cuts herself. This is integral to the story and the plot, it doesn’t make cutting seem like an okay thing but I could see why some would be sensitive to this.

Meg becomes part of the Other’s community and slowly but surely she finds her place in it. It is still a struggle, most of the time she doesn’t understand their reactions to her and she definitely has no clue why they react in certain ways. But we get to learn about the Others with Meg and honestly that is what really made most of this story for me.

***Wolves were big and scary and so fluffy, how could anyone resist hugging one just to feel all that fur? “Ignore the fluffy,” she muttered. “Remember the part about big and scary.”***

For all you romantics out there like me there is a very small hint that eventually there could be a romance between Meg and one of the wolves. But if that is happening I think it will take awhile and be a slow burn. Still it was just enough that it satisfied the need I usually have for romance in my books.

***He watched her, listened to her, and knew she was truly asleep. He kissed her forehead and found the act pleasing for its own sake. And, he admitted as he licked his lips, it was enjoyable for other reasons. Meg wasn’t bitable, but he really did like the taste of her.***

So if you are tired of the same old werewolf vampire story that usually involves a love triangle then this could be for you. I enjoyed the plot, the set-up of the world and some of the main characters and just how unusual and different this story was. Completely unconventional and totally enchanting. I can’t wait to start the next book.
