I really love this series. The concept of creating a new identity and then hiding successfully is always an irresistible one to me. The Jane character is smart, resourceful and very believable, as are the situations. All of the characters are complex, interesting and unfold as the story progresses. The history of the native tribes is always fascinating and as a theme lends an element of the mystical to the story. Sometimes I find the amount of detail surrounding why Jane performs some particular action to be a bit much as it slows things down a trifle, but in general this series is my go-to when I want a book I know I am going to love, for a plane flight or train ride.

Thomas Perry adds real depth to Jane Whitefield. From her Seneca roots to her inner voice represented in dream sequences that guide her along the path and those of the "runners" she cares for.
One of the best Jane Whitfield novels,all are good, but Jane takes it to the highest level to protect and hide a young woman and her child. She saves this young woman from an evil husband and his family. Many twists and turns, but Thomas Perry brings it all together with his great writing style. Jane Whitefield one of the most exciting characters I have had the pleasure read about. Thank you Mr. Perry.
I will say the same of all the Jane Whitefield books.

While they fit into the detective / mystery genre they are very unique.
I have enjoyed the whole series. Nice change from the Jack Reacher / John Rain kind of characters.

1. Female protagonist.
2. Seneca ancestry
3. Up-state NY
4. Bad-ass character who knows her strength and weaknesses.
5. Evolves into what she is rather than being forced into the situation.
6. No military background.

Just finished reading my 6th in the series.
Wonderful adventure well told amazing in its development. I believe this unique story will please the most jaded reader. Here is a spoiler the Good Guys win.
I now own all of the Jane Whitefield books digitally. I have read them all in the past in "real" book form. Now that I have them digitally, I am re-reading again. By owning them, I can always come back and enjoy them again!
I started reading Thomas Perry's novels with Sleeping Dogs. On the strength of that novel,I ordered and read all of the remaining Perry novels, all of which deal with Jane Whitefield.
This one was the most complicated and presented by far the biggest challange to her talents and abilities. I decided to give it four stars, only because I felt that this novel caused me to suspend belief just a few too many times. Having Jane get married a book or so earlier, Mr. Perry also deals hardly at all, with the ease that Jane leaves her husband to go about the very dangerous business of making people disappear.
In this book, she takes on an additional burden. One of her charges, "Bernie the Elephant" knows where all of the Mafia's ill gotten gains are and a scheme is devised to make all of that money disappear as well. I give credit to the way that this is to happen, but it is really hard to believe that when all of the Mafia familes in the United States are looking for you and even have a rather accurate picture of what you look like, that a woman, an elderly man and a teenager are going to be able to elude these forces and remain safe while they travel about the United States and impoverish the Mafia. I also have some trouble with Jane's never ending source of money to buy cars, houses, clothing, etc. for herself and for those she is helping. How she came by that wealth is never really adressed in any of Mr. Perry's books. Having said all that, I really enjoyed the book. Its quite a tale and worth your time to read it.
I am thoroughly enjoying this series. Jane Whitefield is a wonderful character who is beyond memorable. If you like mystery and intrigue as well as very unusual characters, this is the book and the series for you. I am so happy to have discovered this series. I can't brag on it enough. The books are exciting, interesting and very hard to put down. When you finish one, you will immediately want the next one.
