This was a very well written book. There were times I didn't especially like neither Lucien nor Sabrina. Ultimately, of course, they do redeem themselves and you end up liking them. I have to say that a part of me wanted Sabrina and Terence to get together instead of Mary. I am anxious to read the next two installments to see how Sabrina and Lucien evolve. I did find the memory loss a little hard to believe but I guess it was necessary. But I think her hatred of him was a little extreme since he was actually doing her a favor. All in all it was a good read and am looking forward to their daughter's story.Tags : Moonstruck Madness [Laurie McBain] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. One of my all time favorite books -- I have read most of the books this author has written and this series is my favorite. I enjoy re-reading the series and have this book in paper back but the price was right so I grabbed it.
I love Historical Romance and I thoroughly enjoyed this one. There was never a dull moment. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves historical romance, mystery, and plenty of twists and turns.
This Laurie McBain book made me smile with its sometimes over-the-top efforts to make the heroine so 'strong' and, yet, I appreciated the desire to have her be stronger than most story heroines, stepping in to conduct business in order to save and protect her family. While the role the heroine takes seems a bit far-fetched, Laurie McBain covers that aspects with the two cohorts she provides, making it a fun and enjoyable read. Again, the romance element isn't a surprise but McBain makes it interesting in how it develops and progresses. Again, another enjoyable read by Laurie McBain!
I read this when it first came out and didn't recall much about it. While it's not truly romantic in the sense that I expect from modern books I am very glad I read it again. It's amazing how much happens in the book - by the end of the first third more had happened than most modern books have in their entirety. Sabrina comes across as a strong and rebellious teenager who has been put in the position of supporting her unsupportive family. The hero is twice her age and doesn't come to care for her until the last third of the book, making their conflicts less about love and more about control. As well, there are multiple incidents of domestic violence, although they are not repetitive in nature (i.e., not always between the same persons). An interesting read and a bestseller back in the day but not a book I'd rave about today.
What an imaginative story, that is simultaneously well set in history. I enjoyed how well set this novel was. McBain set the scene well, transporting her readers back in time before taking them on an adventurous ride. I also enjoyed the characters that McBain filled this novel with. They were unique without stepping completely out genre. I enjoyed seeing them morph throughout the story, becoming more what we’d expect, without ever loosing who they were.
McBain mixes history with romance, passion with the realities of the lives the author found themselves in with a flair that held my attention. This is definitely a novel that will stand the test of time.
Set in 1746 in Scotland (prologue) and 1751 in England, this is the story of Sabrina Verrick, the Scottish noblewoman, who along with her sister and brother survive after their grandfather, Laird of the MacElden clan is brutally slain by the English at Culloden Moor. They escape to England where they live in the country at the rundown estate of their father, an English marquis who abandoned them as children. There, to feed her family, Sabrina becomes the highwayman "Bonnie Charlie," robbing the rich to aid the poor.
One man she robs, Lucien, Duke of Camareigh, a gambler and a rogue, is no English fop as are most of Sabrina's victims. A self-made man, he decides to trap the wily bandit and have his revenge. Once he captures "Charlie" speaking "his" shoulder, the duke realizes "Charlie" is a beautiful young woman. When she won't reveal who she is, he decides to try seduction.
Superbly written, you'll find this one hard to put down. I love the logic of McBain's intricate plot...no improbable moments here. No contrived black moments. Only great storytelling and suspenseful action. The dialog is clever and the characters wonderfully developed. Sabrina is courageous, good hearted and rebellious to the end and Camareigh is a tough alpha male, just the kind we like to see fall to love's power.
McBain paints vivid pictures of Culloden (to start with) and then the English countryside thereafter, putting you right in the scene. It is so well done. Reading this just reminded me that a 5-star classic never goes out of style. Written in 1977, it sold a million copies. I see why.
I highly recommend it.
